Scent & Tracking Classes

Which class am I in?

Scent 1

Prerequisites:

Obedience Level 1 Certification

What the class covers:

What is sniffing all about? It is amazing that a dog's sense of smell is 10 to 100 million times more acute than a humans! Teach your dog how to find an odor and communicate the location. All breeds benefit from this fun way to increase mental stimulation. Dogs love this class as they are the star!
Scent 1 will focus on teaching the dog the scent, teaching the handler how to watch for the dog’s
indication and handler footwork and leash handling. The team will build skills each week and will work
with the scents Birch, Anise, and Clove. We will go over basic rules for the game and different options
for trialing.

What to bring to class:

First night of class: copy of immunization records. Every week: lots and lots of treats.

Scent 3

Prerequisites:

Club membership.
Passed Scent 1 and 2
Actively trialing, with a minimum of a CPE Level 2 Title, AKC Advanced Title, UKC Superior Title
or a NW1 Title. Or at the discretion of the current Instructor/Training Director.

What the class covers:

Scent 3 will continue to build on skills learned in level two. We will also be introducing converging odors, focus more on unknown hides, continue work with blank rooms. Hides can be up to 4 feet high, buried mixed and searches can have both non-food distraction and food distraction. Classes could be held off-site.

What to bring to class:

First night of class: copy of immunization records. Every week: lots and lots of treats.

Tracking

Prerequisites:

Club membership;

Dogs must be a minimum of nine months old, Good Dog - Obedience 1 graduation certificate or other beginning obedience or pet manners class.

What the class covers:

Tracking is something all breeds of dogs can do, and excel at We just need to show them how to do what comes naturally to them. Whether you go on to achieving your AKC Tracking Titles, or merely have another wonderful skill to practice with your dog, Tracking is a Partnership, and that is what is all about!
This is a 6 week Introductory Tracking class for those who may be interested in pursuing an AKC Tracking Dog Title, TD. We will be working in all kinds of weather condition, terrain, and temperatures.

Laying a scent trail and following the scent to find an object or person.

What to bring to class:

First night of class: copy of immunization records. Every week: lots and lots of treats.

First Class will be held at Pioneers Park. Meet at the Sled Ramp. Future class will be held at local parks to utilize open areas for tracking

Scent 2

Prerequisites:

Scent 1

What the class covers:

Scent 2 will continue to improve handlers’ footwork and leash handling and learning their dogs’
indications. Dogs will continue to work on basic skills. Start working on hides up to three feet, ignoring
non-food distractions, and sand and water buried hides, and an introduction to blank room.
Demonstrate a dog led search.
At this level majority of hides will be known. Scents used in this level is Birch, Anise, Clove.

What to bring to class:

First night of class: copy of immunization records. Every week: lots and lots of treats.

Scent 4

Prerequisites:

Club membership.
Passed Scent 1, 2, and 3
Actively competing, with a minimum of a CPE Level 3 Title, AKC Excellent Title, UKC Master Title, or NW2 Title. Or at the discretion of the current Instructor/Training Director.

What the class covers:

For those handlers and dogs competing in scent work and are beyond Advanced/Level 3 in AKC, CPE or other venues. Classes will focus primarily on unknown number of hides, harder hides, inaccessible hides, food/toy distractions and clearing rooms. Odors will birch, anise, clove, cypress ,vetiver, myrrh. Classes may be held off site.
